Home Visit Therapy Sessions

A Family centred approach to therapy sessions is conducted within your child’s everyday environments including home, preschool, school and out in the community (e.g park, swimming lessons etc).

All therapy sessions are individualised and to suit your child & families needs.

Therapy sessions are approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes in length (e.g 1-hour direct therapy and 15 minutes of session summaries/recommendations emailed to you).

Active involvement from parents/carers is encouraged throughout therapy sessions to ensure you feel confident in implementing and practicing strategies outside of our therapy sessions.

Therapy activities are developed to provide a ‘just-right’ challenge for your child to ensure that they achieve success whilst also supporting them to learn the new skills needed to achieve their goal.

Preschool & School Consultations:

Preschool and school consultations aim to teach those working with your child in their Preschool or school setting the therapeutic strategies to best support your child (e.g equipment prescription, academic modifications, emotional regulation strategies).

Depending on your child’s therapy goals and in consultation with the Preschool or school Educators the OT can facilitate within the classroom or playground fine motor or social groups to support your child’s skill development (e.g social skills, play skills, handwriting).  No withdrawal for one-to-one therapy is completed for Preschool and school consultations.

Providing training to Educators on how to use visual supports is also routinely used during Preschool and school consultations.

These Educator consultations can also be used to attend Individual Family Support Plans (IFSP) and Individual Education Plans (IEP) meetings to provide therapeutic recommendations and to ensure a collaboration approach for everyone working with your child.

Parent Coaching Sessions:

Scissors, Paper, Play, offers parent/carers coaching services to parents wanting some additional individual therapy training.  Parents coaching sessions can occur online via ZOOM video conferencing making accessing flexible and convenient for you (e.g in your work lunch break).  Or these parent coaching sessions can occur face to face in your home environment.  Many parents choose to have a parent coaching session on a day their child is a Preschool or school so they can focus better on understanding and implementing therapy strategies.

Parent Coaching Sessions include training on:

  • Toileting techniques

  • Understanding your child’s sensory needs

  • Feeding and meal time routines

  • Sleep strategies

  • Behavioural strategies

Visual Resources:

The clinical research shows that many children on the Autism Spectrum learn best through visual resources.

Using your NDIS funding the Therapist is able to develop a wide range of visual supports to help your child’s communication skills as well as supporting them in achieving their individual goals.

In consultation with your therapist a wide variety of resources can be developed to be meet your child’s individual needs both at home and within the community (e.g Preschool, school, swimming lessons).

Visual Resources include:

  • Daily home routines

  • School and Preschool routines

  • Behavioural visual supports (e.g First/then visual cards, choice boards).

  • Feeding

  • Toileting

Social stories are another form of visual supports that are commonly developed for those with Autism.  These social stories are often created individually to best meet your child’s needs.  These specialised therapeutic stories often support your child in learning social expectations (e.g learning how to take turns with peers).

Teletherapy Services:

With the ever-changing nature of COVID-19, Scissors, Paper, Play is supporting families and their children through offering Teletherapy services conducted over Zoom Video call.

NDIS also covers the cost of therapy services using Teletherapy.

Teletherapy services are a safe and effective way to still be able to provide therapy and support to children and their families.

Home Therapy Programs:

Home Therapy Programs can also be developed using your NDIS funding.  These Home Therapy Programs are often developed for those families that are accessing Teletherapy services.  The Home Therapy Programs are 5- or 10-week programs that provide simple instructions and visuals on how to use everyday, household objects (e.g pegs, cups, straws etc) during Teletherapy sessions to ensure a ‘hand on learning’ experience on the other side of the screen.

Home Therapy programs can also be used in addition to your regular therapy sessions.  Having access to an individually designed Home Therapy Program means you can continue with the therapy activities during the week.

Home Therapy Programs include:

  • Fine motor pencil grip skills

  • Handwriting skills

  • Scissor skills

  • Play skills
